With Yeovil Town beating Lincoln City to ensure the League Two champions crown, Scunthorpe could afford no slip-ups at Shrewsbury, with a point enough to keep both Southend United and Swansea City at bay as Brian Laws' men secured the runners-up spot.
The visitors earned the point they needed from a game of few chances in which flowing football was at a premium due to a combination of gusty conditions and bumpy pitch.
Shrewsbury brought the curtain down on their season with a committed display that will be of some significance to a large number of the Shrewsbury squad, many of whom were likely to be playing their last game for the club as manager Gary Peters plans a summer shake-up of his Gay Meadow playing staff – most notably striker Luke Rodgers, who has turned down new terms with the club and is heading for pastures new.
Rodgers had precious few opportunities to add to the 73 goals he has amassed in Shrewsbury colours since making his league debut five years ago and left the field to a standing ovation when he was substituted 13 minutes from time.
At the other end teenage goalkeeper Joe Hart once again distinguished himself with another assured display in the Shrewsbury goal.
A member of the young Shrewsbury side who won the Midland Youth Cup in midweek, Hart made a number of excellent saves – in particular a fine reflex stop to deny a spectacular Steve Torpey overhead kick with five minutes remaining.
In a surprisingly low-key first half, Hart saved well from Cleveland Taylor and veteran Scunthorpe striker Peter Beagrie, and it was not until the 51st minute that visiting 'keeper Paul Musselwhite had a goalbound effort to contend with, diving low to smother a shot from Shrews' striker Kelvin Langmead.
In the second half Scunthorpe continued to hold sway, but a draw looked the most likely outcome some way from the final whistle.
