Grant Holt outpaced Paul Groves to push the ball beyond the advancing keeper Tom Evans and Bertos had a simple chance.
Two minutes later Scunthorpe were level. Matt Sparrow fed the ball through for Cleveland Taylor who in turn found Steve MacLean who fired home his 24th goal of the season.
Neil Edwards then denied Terry Barwick but Scunthorpe forced their way ahead in the 23rd minute, centre back Andy Butler cracked the ball from the left of the box.
That was short-lived as the Lancashire side were back on terms three minutes later when Neil Redfearn's free kick was pushed out by Evans into the path of Scott Warner who rammed it quickly into the net.
In between this goal flurry the game was halted for three minutes when a Canada goose made an entrance. It was quickly apprehended and removed by a steward.
The opening 20 minutes of the second half were were poor until Scunthorpe substitute Peter Beagrie tested Edwards.
That signalled more effort from the visitors and Evans was pleased to block a shot from Bertos and from the rebound the same player saw skipper Nathan Stanton's knee stop the ball on the line.
