Scott Brough had tested Phil Barnes, but the Iron took a deserved lead in the 14th minute.
Martin Carruthers could not find his way through but his shot fell kindly to Torpes who promptly fired home from the left-hand edge of the box.
Peter Beagrie, finding form again after recovering from a hamstring injury, nearly increased the lead in the 46th minute when his fierce shot came crashing back off the crossbar. Andy Dawson was on hand to fire home fromt he edge of the area.
The game swung round in the 63rd minute, first United hit the bar and then Pool went up the other end and won a penalty.
Tommy Evans was adjudged to have brought down Richard Walker and Jamie Milligan tucked away the spot-kick.
Five minutes later John Murphy equalised from close range and with nine minutes left Scott Taylor popped up to force the ball home for the almost inevitabl winner.
