Scunthorpe striker Paddy Madden hits a double to down SouthendHot-shot striker Paddy Madden struck twice to help Scunthorpe squeeze into the second round of the FA Cup with a 2-1 home victory against Southend. It was Southend who had the better of the first half, but it was Scunthorpe who snatched a 16th-minute lead with their only real threat of the opening period.A left-wing corner from Luke Williams was not dealt with by the visitors and Madden lashed a left-footed shot into the net from close range for his 11th goal of the season.Southend were deservedly back on level terms in the 30th minute when Ryan Leonard crashed an excellent shot from the edge of the box into the bottom corner after a left-wing cross from David Mooney had been only half cleared.Twice before the interval the visitors went close to taking the lead but both times they were denied by saves from keeper Luke Daniels
First he went full length to his left to turn away a curling effort from David Worrall, then he flung himself full stretch to his right to keep out a stinging drive from Myles Weston.A replay looked on the cards until the 77th minute when Southend again failed to clear a corner and after a close-range shot from Darius Henderson had been blocked, Madden stepped up again to crash home the winner to take his season's tally to 12.Southend manager Phil Brown was sent to the stands in the 88th minute by referee Peter Bankes to compound his frustration
