Michael Rankine enjoyed a fairytale debut as Scunthorpe United returned to winning ways and to the top of Coca Cola League Two.

The 19-year-old striker, signed last week on non-contract forms from non-league Barrow, scored the only goal of a disappointing match in the final minute.

Rankine, a 75th minute substitute for Paul Hayes, tapped in from close range after skipper Andy Crosby had headed on a free-kick by Peter Beagrie.

And after their shock 2-1 home defeat by Chester last Saturday this was just the result manager Brian Laws was looking for. In fairness though Bury, who have now lost two of their last three games, deserved at least a draw.

They started the game strongly and twice went close through midfielders Dwayne Mattis and Brian Barry-Murphy. They also carved out a glorious second-half chance that leading scorer David Nugent wasted by shooting directly at keeper Paul Musselwhite.

Scunthorpe built their win on a strong back four and a hard-working midfield, where Beagrie used all his vast experience to good effect.

And it is no coincidence that Scunthorpe re-discovered the winning habit with Beagrie back in the team after a three-week absence due to a hamstring injury.

Striker Andy Keogh also looked impressive and suffered double misfortune by having a first-half goal ruled out for offside and then being booked for diving in the penalty area.

The game looked to be heading for stalemate though until rookie Rankine stepped in with his matchwinning goal at the death.
