York turn to Torpey in relegation battle

Torpey is youth team coach for the Minstermen, and last played first-team football before Christmas when he was turning out for North Ferriby United in the Unibond Premier Division.

Times are hard at KitKat Crescent, and York find themselves facing relegation with just four league games to play. They are one point from safety, but have only managed one goal in their last seven games.

That is why their manager Martin Foyle has turned to Torpey, he asked the former Swansea and Bristol City player to regain his fitness - he has now played in three reserve games - to give him more attacking options on the bench.

"I don't want to be needed really but, if it came to it, I would be available," he told The Press.

"It's purely down to the manager. He's told me to get myself fit and you never know, so that's what I've done.

"The first team are in a bit of a mess but I think my reserve games are just in case of injuries really. The transfer window has closed so the manager has told me to keep myself fit and have one or two games so, if I'm called upon, I can come in."

York's mis-firing front line includes the former Iron forward Daniel McBreen, who has not scored in 21 league games.
