He played very well in the Shrimpers reserves clash with Oxford's second string on Wednesday and if he earns a contract, could face the Iron next Friday night.
Angus said: “I’ve been mucked about a bit and haven’t had much of a pre-season at all. I’ve been offered contracts here there and everywhere but nothing happened in the end.
“I asked Southend if it was alright to come down and train and get fit. They were kind enough to agree and it will be good for me. I’m not really on trial but it would be a real bonus if I was to sign for Southend and hopefully I could bring something to the club of I did.”
The versatile 24-year-old was released by Cambridge in the summer, and, following a successful loan spell at Glanford Park towards the end of last season, he was set to join the Iron.
But United boss Brian Laws pulled the plug on the signing, thinking things wouldn't work out for personal reasons.
Laws said at the time: "We have withdrawn the contract offer to Stevland Angus because I thought there were too many red flags."
He has previously had a trial with League Two outfit Shrewsbury Town.
