The 26-year-old made two appearances for Neil Redfearn's Conference outfit after arriving at the McCain Stadium on transfer deadline day in a bid to boost his match fitness, but the Seadogs were struggling down at the bottom of the Conference and lost both matches the playmaker was involved in.
Kell, plus Redfearn and Tykes boss Andy Ritchie agreed that the loan spell wasn't working out and the player will now build up his fitness for the Tykes reserve team.
The loan move was part of Kell's recovery from a broken leg. He picked up the injury in his final game for United, which came against Bristol Rovers in April.
He shocked the club though by revealing in June that he had signed a pre-contract agreement with Barnsley and has since continued his recovery at Oakwell.
He has made four appearances for the promotion-chasing Tykes so far.
