He will spend the next three months at the U's, with the Barnsley manager Mark Robins hinting the move may be made permanent.
"Kayode needs to kick start his career. He will go to Colchester for an intial three months and we will take it from there," he said.
Odejayi has made 82 first-team appearances for the Yorkshire club.
