He has been playing full-time for the north-east side after joining them from Harrogate Town in January 2008.
"I have had a great career with lots of highs and thoroughly enjoyed myself," he told the Evening Chronicle.
"However time catches up with everyone and I have to build up my coaching career."
Musselwhite had two spells at Glanford Park, and also played for Port Vale and Hull City.
