Iriekpen left Scunthorpe by mutual consent earlier this month after a disagreement with the Iron manager Nigel Adkins following the 4-4 home draw with Northampton Town.
He was widely criticised by supporters following that game, in which United led 3-0 but had to settle for a disappointing point.
Iriekpen had agreed terms with Hamilton, but according to their manager Billy Reid went behind his agents back to set up a move to City.
"I got a word 24 hours ago, his agent did not know anything about it and his agent only heard at 11 o'clock last night," he told Setanta on Sunday.
"He went behind his back as well and I think he's going to sign for Bristol City."
