Championship side Barnsley had accepted a "substantial six-figure bid" for the forward, who moved to Oakwell from Glanford Park in the summer of 2005.

He spent Wednesday, the final day of the transfer window, locked in talks over a move but could not agreed terms over a move despite six hours of negotiations.

Scunthorpe are entitled to a percentage of any fee Barnsley receive for the player, who had been linked with a move to Southend earlier in January.

"It's a very frustrating situation, but after calling off the search at 8.30pm, I didn't want to bring a lesser player in on loan for the sake of it before midnight," said Os boss Martin Ling.

"The standard of players we have been in for over the last month shows the levels we are aiming for and the bids we have made show the lengths we are prepared to go to bring them to this football club."
