Eyre, who was part of the 1999 promotion winning side before joining his hometown club Hull City, admits his body cannot cope with the rigours of full-time training.
He asked to build up his fitness as Glanford Park, but manager Brian Laws declined his request, and a move to League Two side Darlington failed to materialise.
Eyre BBC Radio Humberside: "I suffered a prolapsed disc five months ago, it's something that i've struggled with since I was 20.
"I've put my body through quite a lot, but I've enjoyed it all
"Getting back to play full-time football is too much for me now. Now it's going to be a change of career for me.
Eyre ready to call it a day
"I've been doing a coaching scheme with East Riding and hopefully I can get that qualification and stay in the game in that form.
"Football is all I know, so if I can keep in the game then that will be a great job for me.
"I'm not missing it greatly, am spending a lot of time with the kids and getting under the wife's feet."
