The 30-year-old, who the Iron released at the end of last season, has impressed since signing in early July and he will try and lead the relegation favourites to safety in League Two this season.

Shrews boss Gary Peters said: "That is one of the reasons I've chosen Kevin, as he can see the danger when the opposition is getting on top and is able to make decisions to get us out of it."

Sharp is looking forward to honour of being Shrewsbury captain for the upcoming season.

The ex-Leeds and Wigan man said: "I've been at a few clubs and I'll be working with the other experienced lads such as Mark, Neil and Dave to help the young lads to develop.

"It's a great honour and when the gaffer first mentioned it to me I was delighted and accepted it.

"I'm really looking forward to getting the season going and leading the team out on Saturday.

"People are writing us off, but I'm quietly confident that with the bunch of lads we've got we can be up there pushing as the season progresses."

Sharp's new side kick off at home to Rochdale on Saturday.
