The 33-year-old former Scotland international, who started his career at Glanford Park, feels he still has a lot to offer at the Lilywhites.
He has been at the club for six years, but boss Billy Davies has hinted that older members of the squad will be restricted to one year contracts.
But Alexander said: "When you're 16/17 you look at the 32/33 year-olds and think they are ancient and you'll never get to that age but now that I am it seems to have flown by so quickly.
"I have enjoyed every single season that I've played and hopefully it will continue for another four or five."
