The former Scunthorpe defender, 40, has finally hung up his boots, and expects to take on a role within current club Preston's coaching staff.
Alexander has already tasted life in the bootroom, having acted as joint-caretaker manager alongside David Unsworth prior to manager Graham Westley's arrival in January.
He is due to hold talks with Preston chairman Peter Ridsdale and hopes a position opens up for him.
"The chairman says we will speak soon so hopefully something can get sorted out," he told the Lancashire Evening Post.
"I'm at that stage where it still sounds a little bit strange when people talk about me being retired, but it's something which all footballers have to go through, and I'm just looking towards the next challenge."
