The former Lilywhites captain made his 400th appearance for the club last weekend, before being told he was free to join Burnley in a £200,000 transfer.
He opted to leave for the security of a two-year playing contract at Turf Moor, after being told he was only going to be offered 12 months at Deepdale.
"Leaving Preston was a massive decision for me, no matter where I was going," he said.
"I've tried to keep my emotions out of it and make the right decision career-wise and I think that this is the right decision - but emotionally it was a very tough decision.
"I spoke to (manager) Paul Simpson about this situation and we agreed to disagree over what has gone on.
"At the end of the day, I had my opinion about what should happen and he had his - that's his prerogative and that's football."
