The Owls lost 1-0 to Bristol City at Hillsbrough on Saturday, but could consider themselves incredibly unlucky after bossing the game
It was their fourth straight loss in the league, leaving them rooted to the foot of the table as the only League club without a point to their name this term.
"I must admit I am surprised to see us down there and I didn't see it coming," said Laws, who is hoping a break from action because of the international break will allow his side time to regroup before facing Preston - who have also had a stuttering start to the campaign.
"They (Bristol City) had one shot and have scored and from then on we had to chase the game. But we have been very unlucky again and I feel like I must have run over a black cat.
"The players are having a good go but it is just not happening for us. They are feeling a bit sorry for themselves but I have told them that there is not an awful lot wrong.
"Hopefully we can work on a few things over the next two weeks. It will be a long two weeks but hopefully we can put things right and get our season off and running against Preston."
