They lost 1-0 at Doncaster, with on-loan Sheffield United striker Jonathan Forte getting the only goal of the game, to slip below MK Dons - who beat Scunthorpe by the same scoreline.
But Onuora was encouraged by the display from his players.
He said: "We had chances but things didn't quite work out for us and that's what happens when you're down at the bottom.
"But I've seen enough to convince me we can move up the table. I was proud of the lads - they couldn't have given me any more effort.
"We've got MK Dons on Saturday and that's a massive game for us but if we play like this then we will be all right."
