The Millers thrashed Crewe Alexandra 5-1 on Saturday to climb out of the bottom four.
It caps an impressive start to the season for the Yorkshire side, who were docked 10 points in the close season after going into administration.
"It's fantastic for everyone at the club and the players to move out of the bottom four," said Knill, a former Scunthorpe defender.
"From day one we always thought we could do it but there is still a long way to go.
"Once we got in front on Saturday we were fantastic, the players can take huge credit from this performance."
