The Millers had lost three on the bounce, including a Carling Cup loss to Leeds, but held on for a goalless draw in the north east.
Harford said: "It was a lot better. The players responded to the situation and a point is always welcome in away games like this.
"We might have got a goal for the three points and their keeper made a great save late on. But it was one of those games.
"We worked hard and we kept their chances down."
