The Millers started the campaign on -10 points after going into administration during the summer, but have pulled out of the bottom four after earning an impressive 28 points - although they only have 18 on the board.
And Knill, a former Scunthorpe defender, points to his side's four wins away from home as the deciding factor in that success.
He knows picking up at least a point at Gillingham on Saturday will go a long way towards his side's hope of avoiding the drop to League One.
"It was the biggest thing that I wanted to change from last year, after Christmas we were great at home but away we were terrible," Knill said.
"We've worked pretty hard on attitudes away from home and so far so good.
"It's not about sitting on your back foot and hoping to catch people, its about going out and playing."
