Dale held the League One side to a 2-2 draw after 90 minutes before claiming a 4-3 victory on penalties.
"That was more like it. That was the performance that we were looking for," he said.
"I wanted the lads to respond in the right manner and they did. Some of our passages of play warranted more reward.
"We played and passed with a courage and built trust blocks again. I can trust the players and they trust the decisions that I make so all in all it was good advertisement for football and a lot learned and achieved."
