Ward, who spent 18 months in charge at Ashton Gate in the 90s, will not be allowed to leave Cheltenham - according to chairman Paul Baker.
He told PA Sport: "At this stage the possibility of John leaving the club is a non-starter. John has another two years left on his contract and I thoroughly expect him to honour that.
"We don't want John to go, and John wouldn't want to go. He likes it here and we've made a good start to the season - everyone is happy.
"Besides, there's a compensation clause in his contract and that may be prohibitive. We're not looking to relinquish our manager or indeed any of our players."
