It is claimed by the club Ritchie Hanlon went to the aid of Gary Butterworth, who was being attacked by a Rochdale follower.
The club and Hanlon claim that he was hit by a baton in the following scenes, despite the club trying to point out that he was part of the club.
"What has disappointed us is that the club's physiotherapist had clearly told the police that he (Hanlon) was a member of the playing staff," said a club spokesperson.
