The 22-year-old has made five appearances this season after being dogged by back problems and a visit to a specialist has revealed the need for surgery and a nine-month lay-off.
"He has worked extremely hard to get fit for the new season and was playing really well, but was feeling his back and unfortunately the specialist has confirmed an operation is required, so he will be out for at least nine months," manager Darren Ferguson told the club's official website.
"It is devastating news for the club and for Jamie. I have spoken with him and he is obviously very down but he will bounce back.
"He is a top lad, a great professional and he will come back stronger I have no doubt about that."
