"It's been a tough start to the season but you have got to remember that when I came here in June, we only had nine or 10 players and there was a lot of rebuilding to be done," he said.
"I have had to bring in a lot of players on loan so it very much a case of work in progress. It isn't going to happen overnight, the owners and supporters know that but I think we are making progress and our aim is to finish as high up the table as possible and then build on that next season."
The Bristol City manager Keith Millen is also hoping their win over Reading - their first home win of the season - turns out to be a turning point for the Robins.
"That's a huge result for us and a missive lift for the players, who gave me everything," he said.
"We can now look forward to entertaining Queens Park Rangers on Friday night. That's a televised game and we usually play well in front of the cameras."
Nigel Pearson, the Hull City manager, did not try to blame the ongoing takeover of the club for the poor performance in Tuesday's 1-0 home loss to Sheffield United.
"I don't think it has any bearing on us on a day-to-day basis whatsoever," he said.
"We're not consistent enough and at the moment and we don't have enough players making the positions their own. That's my responsibility ultimately.
"Defensively we've had one or two heavy defeats but we have otherwise been pretty tight. At the minute we're not producing the goals and it's something that needs to be rectified."
