The 32-year-old smashed his forearm, which is now held together by a plate and nine pins, while playing in September.

He told the Latics' official website: "I have been in the game for 16 years and can look back on a lot of very happy memories.

"The surgeon has told me it is better not to play again, if I fell on my arm I could be permanently disabled."
