McCombe, who moved to Ashton Gate from Lincoln last summer, capped a memorable season by claiming the club's player of the year award.
Johnson said: "Credit to Jamie, he fully deserves this award. He's not only 6'7'' in size but in stature and presence as well.
"He'll be the first to admit there maybe could have been 10 or 11 players of the season - but dare I say he stood out head and shoulders above the rest."
