Knill is in charge of League One side Rotherham, who will start the season on -10 points as penalty for going into administration during the summer.
But Knill, who had a five-year spell at Glanford Park after joining from Bury, is aiming high.
And he cites Warnock as inspiration, who managed Scarborough, Notts County, Huddersfield, Plymouth, Oldham and Bury before leading the Blades to the Premiership.
Knill said: "I'm in my early days as a manager and, at this stage, I think that I would like to have a career as a manager.
"I look at the guy up the road (Warnock) and that's a good example of a career. I reckon he has had a good managerial career and if you've had a career in the game, then you've done pretty well.
"Now, he's going to be managing in the Premiership. It's not bad, is it, considering where he started out?"
