Hessenthaler, who has previously been player-boss at the Gills, put the Kent side ahead in Saturday's 1-1 draw with Scunthorpe at Glanford Park.
And he insists that he is in no rush to hang up his boots for good.
He told BBC Radio Kent: "There are lots of boys my age still playing - look at Peter Beagrie and Teddy Sherringham - and I'm still enjoying it. That's the key - enjoyment.
"Who knows when I'll stop! The legs will dictate that, but they're fine now.
"The manager is pleased with the way I've been playing, and I'll keep going until I know it's time to quit."
