Smith is one of 12 Gills players out of contract this summer and could leave the club on a free transfer.

But Cooper is ready to offer the 33-year-old a new deal, but is waiting for chairman Paul Scally and assistant Ronnie Jepson to return from their summer breaks to begin talks.

"I'm looking forward to meeting the skipper, Paul Smith," he told the Medway Messenger. "I"ve heard all about him from Ronnie and he's a player I hope will stay."
