The 35-year-old defender, who in recent years has had well-documented problems with alcohol, played 60 minutes of the reserves' 1-0 defeat to Notts County at Saltergate on Tuesday.
But manager Roy McFarland believes it is unlikely the ex-Nottingham Forest player has any future with the Spireites.
"I know Gary well and he has had an horrendous time, but he's now getting himself sorted out," he told the Derbyshire Times.
"He's been training with us and he played a game but nothing is likely to be done on the contract front."
Loan signing Sammy Clingan, Alan O'Hare, Adam Smith, Mark DeBolla and Tcham N'Toya all continued their returns to fitness against the Magpies.
In addition, former Crystal Palace goalkeeper Lance Cronin also featured and McFarland cast his eye over French trialist Xavier.
