The Addicks have confirmed that football experts Seymour Pierce will help the Coca-Cola Championship club examine fresh funding options including a share issue or a possible takeover.
Charlton were relegated from the Premier League last season despite spending heavily in summer 2006.
They are among the favourites for promotion from the Championship this term, but were held at home by Scunthorpe on the opening day of the season last Saturday.
A statement by the club to the Stock Exchange read: "The board of Charlton confirms that it has retained Seymour Pierce Limited to consider a range of strategic options, which may or may not lead to an offer for the company."
Seymour Pierce chairman Keith Harris has previously been involved in takeovers at Chelsea, West Ham United and Aston Villa.
