The 33-year-old was a free agent after being released by Sheffield United in the summer.
He will go into the Clarets' squad to face Grimsby in the Carling Cup on Tuesday night, and is likely to feature against Scunthorpe in the league on Saturday.
"He's obviously going to be short of fitness and as you get older, it gets harder," said Burnley boss Steve Cotterill.
"But he will bring great experience to the dressing room and we may throw him in at the deep end against Grimsby. Hopefully he will swim."
