The Robins midfielder, who is yet to play this season, underwent surgery on the knee on Monday afternoon and manager Brian Tinnion confirmed he is likely to out for about four weeks.
"He hasn't missed a game for two years and it's a real shock," Tinnion said.
"He wasn't quite right to play against Doncaster in our first game of the season but seemed fine doing some running the day after.
"Then by Monday the knee had ballooned, I've had the same injury in the past. I was playing again within a month."
