Tabb was hit as he left the field after being substituted eight minutes from time, with two cigarette lighters also thrown towards him.
He needed treatment for several minutes by the touchline -and is thankfully alright - but outraged boss Martin Allen has called for action to be taken against those responsible.
He said: "Both clubs have a duty to ensure that the person or persons responsible for this are dealt with. We have already made a statement to the police and hope they can identify the culprits.
"There is no room for that sort of thing in football. No manager at any club wants to see that sort of thing happen to his players."
Terriers boss Peter Jackson added: "I did not see the incident involving Tabb but I must say I was disappointed with the crowd.
"There were only 11,500 here to watch two sides at the top of this division."
