Scunthorpe looked lively and had an early penalty appeal dismissed when Steve MacLean went down in the box and then Steve Torpey headed over and a dipping free kick by Peter Beagrie forced John Danby to have two attempts at saving.

However the Harriers drew first blood after 18 minutes after Tommy Evans had parried a shot from Mark Yates the home defence was static as Ian Foster rounded Nathan Stanton to fire home.

That gave the visitors encouragement and Sean Parrish, Dean Keates and Dean Bennett all had good opportunities.

Scunthorpe rallied and Beagrie's cross found Paul Groves who managed to reach the ball but his attempt was well stopped by Danby while Kevin Sharp struck a 25-yard free-kick over the crossbar.

The Harriers were on the back foot on the restart and skipper Wayne Hatswell forced Danby to push the ball over.

But when Keates hammered home a second in the 54th minute, Scunthorpe were again found wanting.

MacLean had a chance just after the hour but a defensive intervention prevented his lobbed attempt reaching the mark.

Scunthorpe were then reduced to ten men when Sharp was shown a straight red card with 20 minutes to go after a clash with Parrish who was shown yellow but that really ended a disappointing night for the Iron
