Wharton is currently heading up plans to redevelop the Doncaster Road terrace at Glanford Park, but initial planning proposals were rejected.
United will resubmit the plans, but are also exploring their options away from their home of the past 19 years.
"I thought it right to have one final look to what the possibility of relocation to a new stadium would be," Wharton told the Scunthorpe Telegraph.
"Because the cost we are talking about with the proposed development is so high it would be many years before the club was able to look at the question of relocating again.
"All we are doing at the moment is just seeing what other alternatives there are before we go ahead with the development already being planned."
Scunthorpe kick-started the recent trend for new grounds when they moved from the Old Showground to Glanford Park in 1988.
