United were relegated at the weekend, following promotion from League One as champions last season.
But Hammond is drawing inspiration from Southend, who made the same drop last term but are in contention for an immediate return as they currently occupy one of the play-off spots in the third tier.
"Look at Southend and what they've done this season. It is early days but we've go to give it a right go next season," he told the BBC.
"At the moment we've 14 players in contract and so we're just looking to build the squad for next season."
