Laws said: "They were positive talks. We're looking to try and strengthen in the immediate future and I'm pleased with the outcome.
"There's certainly a couple of players who could have a real chance of progressing.
"But one step at a time. We've got the go-ahead and will now look to solve the problems we've got at the moment due to injuries."
Five trialists featured in the midweek reserve win over Sheffield United.
Left winger Robbie Foy particularly impressed, but Laws singled out striker Daniel McBreen and midfielder Shane Paul for praise
Midfielder Warren Moon and forward man Paul Olima also featured in the game.
United have been without a left winger since Peter Beagrie left the club in the summer, while there is also a lack of cover up front with Ramon Calliste out of action for six months with ankle ligament damage.
Laws did, however, go some way to easing his striking problems by securing the services of Cardiff youngster Andrea Ferretti on loan last week.
It is also unclear how long midfielders Jim Goodwin and Ashley Allanson face on the sidelines with head and ankle injuries respectively.
