Torps scores hat-trick

Steve Torpey, the much lauded and much criticised record signing of Scunthorpe United, scored three second half goals yesterday evening as the Iron's pre-season jaunt to Northern Ireland ended with a 4-0 win over Linfield, who last season finished third in the Northern Irish Premier League.

Iron manager Brian Laws used only members of the first team squad, and the club's only summer signing Paul Wheatcroft opened the scoring two minutes into the game chipping the goalkeeper from the edge of the area after playing a one two with Martin Carruthers.

With a number of half-time substitutions came the introduction of Torps, who volleyed home crisply first on 54 minutes.

His second, also a volley, came after 62 minutes whilst he headed in his third and final goal with 20 minutes still to go.

After the match Laws seemed just as baffled by Torps' ability to score three goals in a match as the rest of us - even if only in a friendly encounter.

"Torps can't remember the last time he scored a hat-trick, it must have been when he was a youngster," he said.
