The managerial candidates

Russ Wilcox

Brought to Glanford Park by Laws as a player in a £15K move from Preston North End, Wilcox took on the assistant manager role when Mark Lillis left to take charge at Halifax.
Has experience of managing the reserve team and has a strong knowledge of all the players. Good results while in caretaker charge would give him the edge.

Paul Wilson

Has worked wonders with the youth team at the club, reaching the Youth Alliance Cup final at Wembley three years ago is among the highlights. The vast majority of the current first-team squad at the club came through the ranks under Wilson's guidance and he commands their total respect. Might well be the man to continue the development of some of out younger players.

Mark Lillis

A popular figure among Iron fans, Bhuna is a former player and assistant-manager. He was number two to Laws when the club won promotion via the play-offs in 1999 and some supporters have retrospectively credited him with the success more than Laws.

He left the club to take charge at Halifax Town, where he lasted less than a season as the Yorkshire club headed out of the league. He returned to coaching with the goal-shy Northern Ireland national team, and when manager Sammy McIllroy left to take charge of Stockport he followed to become his assistant at Edgley Park.

Alan Buckley

Made his name with local rivals Grimsby Town, taking them up the divisions. Has repeatedly been linked with the club and has been a regular face in the stands when he has been out of work. Unsuccessful spells at Lincoln and Rochdale have tarnished his reputation.

Nigel Clough

Brian Clough was Laws' mentor at Nottingham Forest and he based much of his management style on `Old Big Head`, so it would be ironic if Clough Junior was to be his replacement at Glanford Park.

Clough is cutting his teeth at Burton Albion, who he lead to the Nationwide Conference. Expected to be given a chance in the Football League soon.

Albion are currently struggling for form and have dropped to 15th in the Conference table, before yesterday they had lost seven of their last eight matches.

Paul Groves

Groves joined the club on loan from Grimsby last month and is expected to stay until the end of the season. He was appointed player-manager of the Cods towards the end of last season after it became clear the club would be relegated. He was relieved of his managerial duties at Blundell Park this season as the club faced a second successive relegation.

Tony Daws

Played in 223 competitive games for the Iron between 1987 and 1993, scoring 71 times before signing for Grimsby in a £50K transfer. The most memorable of these was the equalising goal in the 1992 Fourth Division play-off final against Blackpool at Wembley. Has the full compliment of UEFA badges and is a regular at Scunthorpe matches as expert summariser for BBC Radio Humberside. Runs football coaching sessions for local youngsters.

Steve Cotterill

Made his name as a manager with Cheltenham Town, taking the Robins up three leagues from the Doc Martens League to the Second Division. He left in 2002 to take charge of Stoke, and four months later walked out on the Potters to become number two to Howard Wilkinson at Sunderland. The Black Cats drop out of the Premier League saw him and Wilkinson out of work.

John Gregory

Scunthorpe-born Gregory has experience managing Portsmouth, Plymouth, Wycombe, Aston Villa and Derby County. While in charge of Villa he kept the side in the top half of the Premiership table but quit citing `pressures of the job`. He lead the side to the 2000 FA Cup final, losing out to Chelsea. After leaving Derby last year he said he was going to take a break from football, but everyone says that don't they.

Graham Taylor

Another Scunthorpe-born candidate, Graham Taylor grew up close to the Old Show Ground and his father Tommy was a sports journalist for the Scunthorpe Evening Telegraph. Never played or managed the Iron, but had successful spells with Grimsby and Lincoln. Managed England for a brief period, where he was compared unfavourably to a turnip by several national tabloids. Bounced back as a manager with Watford and Aston Villa.

Glenn Hoddle

Ok, so it is very unlikely. But Hoddle has been out of work since he was sacked by Tottenham Hotspur and was overlooked for a return to Southampton recently. As England manager took the Three Lions to the 1998 World Cup finals but was sacked after controversial comments about disabled people.

Scunny Bunny

Popular with the kids, and knows the team well. Performances in the annual Mascot Grand National are not promising.
