Stamp backed to be a success

The 29-year-old midfielder performed well in the middle of the park during United's 3-2 reserve defeat to Hull City on Wednesday, and should he sign permanently, the ex-Middlesbrough and Hearts man could prove to be an excellent bit of business by boss Brian Laws, if he works hard enough, according to Stewart.

"Phil Stamp Is a player of immense footballing ability, but with a massive lazy streak. If I were being very honest, I would say he is one of England's wasted talents," he admitted.

"Phil is a VERY physical player, and uses that utility well. He will never shy a tackle, and also has a keen eye on goal.

"But weight is one of Stampy's BIG problems. He cannie pass a McDonalds!"

Stamp was quite a popular figure at Hearts, but was released due to cost-cutting measures, with some of his antics instantly winning over the crowd.

He added: "He was a bit of a hero when he scored a last-minute winner against Our city rivals Hibs about 4 seasons ago. He got sent off for his celebrations after that game!"

The player was linked with a move to League One rivals Hartlepool United this summer, that didn't materialise, but Stewart thinks Hartlepool's loss is the Iron's gain.

"He certainly does. He is very much a big game player. When he needs to turn it on, he certainly does. If Scunthorpe get stuck in a rut, for example, mid-bottom of the table, then I reckon he will lose interest.

"He was always a great player when he did play though. Scunthorpe could do a lot worse."

Thank's to Stewart for his time. He is editor of Jambo's-Mad, and excellent Heart of Midlothian website, which is well worth visiting.
