The 25-year-old has been out of action since suffering a knee ligament injury at Carlisle in early December.
After two months on the sidelines he returned to training on Thursday, and after impressing manager Nigel Adkins may have forced his way into the squad for the trip to Gresty Road.
"Matt came through training very well and if he has no reaction then obviously he gives us another option for the match at Crewe," Adkins told PA Sport.
"He looked very sharp, and that's testament to the treatment he's received from our physio Alex Dalton who's looked after him."
