Despite heavy snow blanketing much of southern England on Monday, the Shrimpers had said they expected the game to go ahead.
The game was still due to go ahead after an inspection by the match referee Keith Hill at 1.30pm
Hill checked the pitch throughout the afternoon but decided shortly before kick-off that it would have been unsafe for players to take part in the game.
"We are really disappointed as we wanted to play the match," the Southend boss Steve Tilson told his club's official website.
"The ground staff have worked hard to try and get the game on and we felt that the referee could have made a decision earlier."
Both managers agreed that it was too dangerous to play.
