Preview: Laws wary of Ryan threat

Swann's latest offering has convinced some Iron fans that Brian Laws' days at the club could be numbered.

The Iron chief yesterday reiterated his opinion that he 'expects and wants more' from the players and management and suggested a win at early pacesetters Chesterfield would only 'paper over the cracks'.

Chesterfield have had problems of their own of late having failed to win in their last four games and manager Paul Cook has called for the Spireites fans to have patience with his faltering side.

“We’re struggling with teams that set up deep and keep a lot of men behind the ball", Cook told the Chesterfield official website ahead of the visit of the Iron.

“We’ve got to be braver with our play and we’ve got to be more inventive to show everyone that we are the best team in this division.

"Teams seem to come and enjoy playing here. We’ve got to go back to the way we were playing early on in the season and make it more uncomfortable for teams."

Iron boss Brian Laws has demanded a response from his players after the 4-1 mauling at York on Tuesday night and beleives he will get a positive one.

“We’ve played teams up there and it seems to bring out the best in us; that’s encouraging", Laws said.

Saturday’s game will see Jimmy Ryan face his former side alongside ex loanee Richie Humphreys and Sam Togwell- who are both likely to be in the matchday squad.

Laws is wary of the threat posed by Ryan, who impressed him during his time at Scunthorpe.

“We know the likes of Jimmy Ryan – I think he’s a quality player,” said Laws.

“I was disappointed that we were going to have to lose him, but it was a financial thing more than anything else – we just couldn’t afford to pay him the wages that Chesterfield were going to offer him."

Team News

Chesterfield will be without Sam Morsy for the visit of Scunthorpe while fellow midfielders Tendayi Darikwa and Ollie Banks are doubts.

Morsy will be out for at least four to six weeks after damaging knee ligaments during the goalless draw at Bristol Rovers last weekend. Darikwa and Banks have been struggling this week with illness.

Club captain Ian Evatt was replaced late on at the Memorial Stadium but it was merely a precautionary measure and the centre-half has since trained. Eoin Doyle will miss out against the Iron, though, as he serves a one-match suspension for his late red card in Bristol.

Meanwhile, full-backs Drew Talbot (groin) and Nathan Smith (ankle) are closing in on a return to first-team action and on-loan Sheffield United striker Chris Porter will return to his parent club after Saturday's game.

Scunthorpe could be without defender Niall Canavan and midfield pair Matt Sparrow and David Syers.

Centre-back Canavan twisted his ankle in the midweek defeat at York, while Sparrow (hamstring) and Syers (ankle) were also forced out of the game. All three players remain doubtful.

Cliff Byrne could fill in at centre-half, while Etienne Esajas and teenager Hakeeb Adelakun could come into contention for starts.

Strikers Jimmy Spencer and Chris Iwelumo, plus winger Terry Hawkridge are also among those pushing for recalls. Manager Brian Laws could be tempted to make changes as his side chase a first league win in six matches.

Winterton Iron have space on their coach for tomorrow's game.
