The full statement released today is reproduced below.

The Chairman today reported that an approach had been made to the Club regarding a possible interest in purchasing the remaining un-issued shares in Scunthorpe United Football CLub Ltd.

Discussions are taking place in confidence and should a definate offer be made he will make further statement.

A share issue last season helped United weather the tide of the collapse of ITV Digital and help ease the financial problems experienced at the club, with debts believed to be upto £2million.

The last major investment into the club was made by local businessman Chris Holland as he joined the board, having previously guided Halifax Town to the Conference title as chairman.

Previously a takeover bid had been launched by other local businessman, lead by shop owner Des Comerford, although at the time the offer was refused by the board.  Mr Comerford made no secret of the fact he could not work with some of the directors.

As yet though there is no indication that this news could provide anything more than a new shareholder, albeit a substantial one.
