They ran into a 4-0 lead over the Essex side, relegated from the Championship last season along with Scunthorpe, before conceding two goals in second-half stoppage time.
But although letting in the two late efforts took the shine off the result for the North East side, the Monkey Hangers boss Danny Wilson reckoned his side have set a standard they must now maintain.
They will have the first chance to prove it was not a fluke on Tuesday when they host the Iron in the first round of the Carling Cup.
"They played tremendously well as a team and have now set a standard for themselves," he said.
"We played ever so well and fully deserved to win 4-0, never mind 4-2. But this is only the start - we have to produce this sort of thing consistently."
