The club announced on Thursday that they had turned down a written transfer request from the Northern Ireland international, who moved to Glanford Park from Stoke City last summer.

Although his agent Gary Mellor said last week that Paterson was not trying to engineer a move away from North Lincolnshire, he has now insisted the player will not be withdrawing his request to leave.

"He is adamant he wants to leave. He wants to play Championship football," he told the Scunthorpe Telegraph.

Burnley have had two bids rejected, the second was worth £550,000, while Cardiff and Norwich have also been linked with moves.

The Clarets were offering £450,000 with a further £100,000 depending on appearances plus a payment if the Lancashire seide secured promotion to the Premier League.

Paterson has cost Scunthorpe £335,000 in transfer fees. A Football League tribunal ruled that they must pay Stoke £275,000 up front, with further £30,000 payments after 15, 30, 45, 60 and 75 appearances. He played 42 times this season.

Stoke also have a 20 per cent sell-on clause, though it is unclear whether this is of the full transfer fee United stand to receive or just on any profit.

Wherever Paterson ends up playing his football next season, it looks unlikely that it will be Scunthorpe.
